Former England footballer Wayne Rooney has reported a range of photos taken of him to police, his lawyers have said.

The photos, which were shared widely on social media, appear to show the Derby County manager asleep in a chair with unknown women posing beside him.

It is not known when the images were taken and there is no suggestion Rooney has behaved in any way inappropriately.

The ex-Manchester United star’s representatives confirmed the matter had been reported to police.

His lawyers have declined to comment on the nature of the images.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said the force was so far “not aware” the matter had been reported.

What I don’t understand is why high profile people tend to dig a hole for themselves when there is no need to.

If, as reported “…..there is no suggestion he has behaved in anyway inappropriately.”, why has he drawn attention to himself by reporting the photos to the police, thereby announcing to the world that he may have something to hide! He’s a high profile sportsman: Does he think nobody has taken pictures of him before! Does he normally charge for pictures to be taken! Were the “unknown women” naked! Was he annoyed that he was asleep at the time, and missed all the fun! WAS he asleep at the time! Is it all just a publicity stunt!

If he hadn’t reported the details to the police, I’d have some sympathy for him. But, under the current circumstances that have been reported by The BBC, for me, he joins all the other celebrities who constantly strive to get into the daily papers.

Whatever his reasoning is, only he knows. I hope he’s prepared for the stress he’s directed towards himself; otherwise he’s in for a rough journey.
